SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat: Jonathan Baldock 'Facecrime'
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Baldock 'Facecrime'\nFri\, 13 Mar 2020 - Sun\, 21 Jun
2020\n11.00 AM - 6.00 PM\n\nWe are delighted to welcome back Jonathan Bald
ock\, Freelands Foundation artist in residenceat Bluecoat January 2018\, f
or his solo exhibition\, Facecrime.\n\nThe main installation contains a l
andscape of ceramic columns inspired by cuneiform-inscribed tablets - an e
arly system ofwriting - dating from 2500BC. Baldock’s version presents a
n alternative history of clay as a tool of communication\; his ceramic col
umns feature expressive faces\, emoji symbols and make audible groans\, wh
istles and chuckles through concealed speakers. The columns are also adorn
ed with weaving\, basketry and glass drawn from different eras of labour\,
folklore and storytelling like an archeological find from a parallel univ
erse.\n\nThe exhibition title itself is inspired by Orwell’s dystopian n
 ovel\, 1984 - a facecrime being an “unconscious look of anxiety\, a habi
tof muttering to yourself” suggesting that there was something to hide.
Facecrime was commissioned by Camden Arts Centre through the Freelands
 Lomax Ceramics Fellowship.\nExhibition Launch \nThu 12 Mar\, 6-9pm \nJoi
n us for the launch of Frances Disley's Pattern Buffer and Jonathan Baldoc
k's Facecrime.\nClick here for more information
