ession 1: Middle Ages &amp\; Renaissance\n\nAlthough long considered as 'd
ark centuries'\, the Middle Ages were actually a time of lively artistic p
roduction. We will familiarise with the arts of this long period\, that cu
lminated in one of the most impactful visual revolutions\, and consider th
e social and cultural context they expressed. In the second part of the da
y\, we will carry on into the 1400 and 1500\, when a profound cultural ren
ovation transformed the arts. Which were the elements of this renovation?
What did it mean to Renaissance men to feel like 'dwarfs on the shoulders
of giants'? How were similar issues explored in different countries?\n\nSe
 ssion 2: From 1600 to 1800 – from Baroque to Romanticism\n\nThe 17th cen

rnational connections all around Europe. The day will be an exploration an
d reflection on the different artistic styles\, so diverse and yet so inte
rtwined\, that emerged and developed from this period onwards\, considerin
g the increased impact of the arts on the transforming societies of the 18
th and 19th century\, and vice versa. The main periods and movements cover
ed in this session include: Baroque\, Dutch painting Golden Age\, British
 painting\, Rococo\, Neo-Classicism\, Romanticism.\n\nSession 3: Impression
ism and the 20th century\n\nThe day will start with a close observation of
the artworks produced by Impressionist artists\, in their context\, and o
f their relation to other artworks from the same period\, to discover the
first signs of the radical revolution that was about to take place at the
turn of the 1900. The second part of the day will fully explore the deep n
ovelties of the 20th century\, discussing\, analysing\, and questioning th
e transformation of the very idea of art\, and the objects that were creat
ed as a consequence of this transformation\, from the Avant-gardes of the
beginning of the century to the last decades.\nTutor: Sara Riccardi\nSara
