We will explore various colours\, shapes and textures with exam ples of abstract styles\, where you will choose a famous abstract artist t o imitate the style of\, using coloured pencils and pastels. During the se cond half of the day you will put the introductions into practice and use acrylic paints to do a series of experiments exploring colour and mood. Yo u’ll begin with an underlying structure/theme\, then move to a broader v isual improvisation where you get to create as you go\, moving the paint a round on the surface using water and spreaders\, and adding shapes\, textu res and motifs that feel right to you.\n\nDay 2 will focus on composition and geometric shapes. You will explore factors which all work together at once: colour\, line\, shape\, contrast\, focal area and movement. You will look at opposites: saturated and neutral\, dark and light\, busy and quie t\, textured and flat. Looking into the arrangement of these elements and their relationship to one another you will learn how to put these together onto paper/canvas\, producing aesthetically pleasing arrangements and pat terns. We will also look at the vanishing point and explore its use in cre ating a “tunnel” effect.\n\nDay 3 will combine concepts from days 1 an d 2\, plus experimentation with layering for depth\, self-exploring\, and how to be “confidently spontaneous and intuitive”.
