SUMMARY:: Bluecoat Display Centre: Meet the Maker: Simon Dredge
DESCRIPTION:\n\nIn the Window Installation for Pride in Liverpool showcases
the work of local ceramic artist Simon Dredge\, as part of the celebratio
 ns for Liverpool Pride.\n\nMeet the Maker\nSaturday 27 July 2pm-4pm\nJoin
us for an informal afternoon where you can come along and have a chat with
Simon about his work and have some refreshments with us.\n\n \n\nSimon’
s plates are made in both porcelain and architectural clays\, he uses cera
mic body stains\, underglaze\, acrylic inks\, acrylic paints and spray pai
nts on his work.\n\n \n\nThe window installation and selling display at th
e Bluecoat Display Centre runs from 1 July - 31 July 2024\, to coincide wi
th Pride in Liverpool celebrations.\n\n \n\nBluecoat Display Centre has be
en awarded funding by the Ulrike Michal Foundation for the Arts to enable
this window installation.\n\n \n\nLiverpool based Simon Dredge is an Engli
sh ceramic artist whose work explores the impact of history in shaping our
cultural understanding. For the Pride window Simon wanted to celebrate th
e diversity of the gay and queer community in Liverpool and the wider Mers
eyside area. Liverpool has a long history of being inclusive to this commu
nity and over recent years this inclusivity has become stronger and more p
rominent. From having the first LGBT quarter in the country to having one
of the largest Pride festivals in Europe.\n\n \n\nSimon wants to bring dis
tant and unheard voices to his work so for this collection he wanted to in
clude both historical figures interwoven with more modern and well-known p
eople. For Simon including people who were trailblazers and forward thinki
ng for their time is so important as these are the people who made living
now as open and proud LGBTQIA++ possible.\n\n \n\nThis collection is colou
rful and bright and a true celebration of a culture that has given so much
to the world. Liverpool is and was so important to giving the world so mu
ch of this culture. From the use of Polari\, a secret language used by the
community for many years to pubs and clubs that people may remember\, and
previous Pride festivals\, this collection seeks to highlight an importan
t history and recognise how we should always appreciate what the past has
given this community.\n\n \n\nSimon works with both porcelain and architec
tural clays. He uses ceramic body stains\, underglaze\, acrylic inks\, acr
ylic paints and spray paints on his work. The most important aspect for hi
s work is layering and to give his work depth and intrigue. It must always
be intriguing. Language and its use are also important. It’s not about
 political messages\, it’s about humanity and understanding.\n\n \n\nSimo
n Dredge said - “I wanted to make pieces that stand out\, I didn’t wan
t to create work that was just nice or non-descript. I wanted to look at t
he work and see layers that show a thought process.”\n\n \n\nSimon’s w
ork has recently been on exhibition at Collect Art Fair in London represen
ted by Alveston Fine Arts\, with works being bought by Ulster Museum in Be
lfast for their permanent collection. Visitors to Simon’s installation h
ad been visibly moved by it.\n\n \n\nWorks from the In the Window for Prid
e in Liverpool Installation will be on display and on sale from 1 July - 3
 1 July 2024 at Bluecoat Display Centre.\n\n
