SUMMARY:Bluecoat Display Centre: Bluecoat Display Centre: In The Window - C
 hris Turrell Watts
DESCRIPTION:In The Window - Chris Turrell Watts / Friday 1st May 2020 - Sun
day 31st May 2020\n\nChris Turrell Watts is a local ceramicist and has bee
n working in clay for over 25 years\, making work for sale\, exhibition a
nd retail. He has taught in a variety of institutions including Central St
Martins and University of Brighton as well as commissions from the Liverp
ool Biennial and consultant to Turner Prize winners\, Assemble.\n\nIn the
last few years he has set up and run an open access ceramics studio called
Baltic Clay which is situated in Liverpool. This studio provides access t
o space and equipment for ceramic artists and classes for beginners.\n\nHi
s work explores the darkly playful side of childhood toys influenced by me
dieval illustrations\, Japanese anime and ritual costume.\n\nWonderbeasts
are a series of ceramic pieces that are drawn from medieval illustration\,
folklore and Outsider art. I’m interested in the space between fact and
legend\, exploring notions of the wild magic of nature and our own world
of order and familiarity. Storytelling is a key theme to these pieces\, su
ggesting distinctive characters and individual narratives. Created from a
mix of hand building and press moulding and using layers of coloured slips
and oxides\, these objects feel alive and purposeful.\n\nChris will also
be here on LightNight\, Friday 15th May to talk about his work and demonst
rate how he makes his fantastical Wonderbeasts.\nChris will be running a w
orkshop at bdc\, to make your own Wonderbeast on Sunday June 7th from 11am
 - 4pm.Tickets are £65 for friends of bdc\, or £70 full price\, anyone wh
o attends our LightNight event can get the reduced price of £65. Places a
re limited to 12\, so please call 0151 709 4014 to book\, or email us on
