SUMMARY:Bluecoat Display Centre: Bluecoat Display Centre: Craftivism
DESCRIPTION:Craftivism\n\nSaturday 10th June – Saturday 15th July 2017\nP
 rivate View: Friday 9th June\, 5.30pm – 7.30pm\n\nExhibiting artists inc
lude Jennifer Collier\, Caroline Gregson\,\nSian Hughes\, Katrin Sprange
r\, Phil Young &amp\; Emma Ware.\n\nCraftivism will showcase the work of
artists who have found their voice through craft or who have helped and i
nspired others to find theirs through socially engaged practice. Bluecoat
Display Centre aims to reveal how this social engagement informs the maker
’s work alongside the variety of means in which ethically and socially a
ware work can be manifested.\n\n\nThe exhibition is also inspired by the o
utreach work of Bluecoat Display Centre in local hospitals and social care
groups. Our outreach projects involve local artists teaching individuals
craft techniques\, with a view to benefit their overall sense of wellbeing
. Works by local artists who have played an integral part in our outreach
programme will be exhibited. This exhibition is inspired by the term Crafti
vism\, which refers to the combination of craft and activism. It is the ut
ilisation of personal creativity to express an opinion about the wider wor
ld. It is a means of reinforcing your voice and bringing about positive ac
tion and change through a form of activism that is simultaneously personal
to you\, whilst being accessible to a broader range of people.\n\nCraftiv
ism has been described as ‘a way of looking at life where voicing opinio
ns through creativity makes your voice stronger\, your compassion deeper &
amp\; your quest for justice more infinite.’ It is formed on the idea t
hat instead of using your voice to express your dissent\, you can use your
creativity which is often more successful in capturing the imagination an
d is a means for others to get involved.\n\nWith the rise of mass producti
on there can seem to be little need for craft on an individual level. Howe
ver\, this has not dampened the appeal of craft and applied art. In fact\,
the application of craft and participation in such activities has grown i
n popularity. Applied art and Craftivism have recently come to the fore ow
ing to the resurgence of interest in traditions: the handmade\, vintage an
d nostalgia. This is in antipathy to the rise of consumerism with its deta
chment from the making process and subsequent heightened anonymity of the
maker.\n\nCraftivism is curated by Gallery Assistant\, Jessica Fenna.\n\n
