SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat: Deborah Roberts - A Look Inside
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Roberts: A look inside\n\n\n\nThe first major European
solo exhibition from award-winning US-based artist Deborah Roberts. Combin
ing collage with mixed media\, her figurative works critique notions of be
auty\, the body\, race and identity in contemporary society through the le
ns of Black children in the USA.\nBorn and working in Austin Texas\, Rober
ts' work is held in several collections in US based galleries and in the U
K\, but this show marks the first time the artist has held a major solo ex
hibition in a British gallery\, featuring both her text works and figurati
ve collages.\nHer works on paper and on canvas combine found images\, sour
ced from the internet\, with hand-painted details in striking compositions
that invite viewers to look closely\, to see through the layers. In addit
ion to representational imagery\, the artist also makes text works in whic
h she juxtaposes words in ways that expose racism and racial biases entren
ched in language and linguistic systems.\nMore: https://www.thebluecoat.or
