SUMMARY:Bluecoat: Bluecoat 300: Charity\, Philanthropy and the Black Atlant
 ic
DESCRIPTION:Bluecoat 300: Charity\, Philanthropy and the Black Atlantic\nTh
is two-day event explores links between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and
philanthropy\, revealing the presence of slavery and the Black Atlantic in
Bluecoat's and Liverpool’s history. It takes place in the context of tw
o anniversaries: the tercentenary of Bluecoat\, built in 1717 as a charity
school for orphans\; and ten years since the International Slavery Museum
opened.\nClick here view the full Bluecoat 300 Programme.\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp
\;\nFriday 24 November 9am-5.30pm\nSymposium at Dr. Martin Luther King J
 nr.\, Building\, Albert Dock\, Liverpool \nKeynote Speaker: Professor C
atherine Hall (University College London)\nLike many 18th century Liverpo
ol institutions\, Bluecoat was built to a large degree with funds derived
from the expanding port. Recent research by Sophie Jones into the founding
years of the school suggests that at least 65% of regular subscriptions w
ere derived directly from trading in slaves or related industries.\nWhile
slavery is often presumed to be counter to or distant from the ‘virtuous
realm’ of philanthropy\, this symposium takes Bluecoat as a symbol of a
more challenging\, contradictory history. It will explore how Transatlant
ic slavery filtered through and shaped charity\, philanthropy\, religion\,
  education\, philosophy\, culture\, literature and art.\nIncludes a consid
eration of Elaine Mitchener’s SWEET TOOTH. \nBook now for Bluecoat
