SUMMARY:ArtHouse Gallery: ArtHouse SCA: Paul Daley Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:“I LOVE TO DRAW” - a pastime becomes a passion\n\nPaul Dale
y can trace his early interest in art back to his childhood growing up in
Newcastle where he passed his days (or at least some of them) portraying h
is fantasies in the family home.\n\n“As a child growing up there were 3
things to do - (i) you read or watched something on TV\; (ii) then you act
ed it out with friends or if the weather was bad (iii) you drew it. I love
d to draw things and I have kept that interest going into adulthood.”\n\
nPaul’s inspiration for his work mirrors his own fascinating background
and career path. Paul’s family originally moved down to Crosby when he w
as 11\, but looking for employment after leaving school\, he was obliged t
o look farther afield than the North West. Moving to London in the 1980’
s\, he soon began working for a Film Transport company working on advertis
ements and feature films including “Dance with a Stranger” (1985)\, st
arring Southport actress Miranda Richardson\, and two Bob Hoskins’ movie
s\, “Mona Lisa” (1986) and “Prayer for the Dying” (1987).\n\nAs fr
iends and workmates discovered Paul’s passion for drawing and painting\,
he was soon inundated with requests. They would bring in their family pho
tographs for him to reinterpret on paper. It even expanded into Paul trans
lating some of them into specialist tattoo designs.\n\n“I use pencil\, w
atercolour\, inks and I have also dabbled in oils and airbrushing. I am no
t afraid to test out all medias because some subjects lend themselves more
to being drawn\, while others benefit from being painted.”\n\nIn 2002 t
o mark the 50th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the
throne\, Paul celebrated the event with his striking watercolour and penci
l double portrait of the monarch: “I painted the Queen for a contest adv
ertised in ‘THE SUN’ newspaper celebrating her Golden Jubilee\, contra
sting her at the time of her 1952 coronation with that of the present day.
”\n\nIn his more personal work\, Paul likes to merge his love of wildlif
e and his enjoyment of punishing activities\, as a stimulus to assembling
his paintings and drawings: “When I paint for myself I like portraying e
xtreme sports. I was a climber and enjoyed both mountaineering and coastee
ring.”\n\nThe window exhibition at the ArtHouse will be a big step forwa
rd for Paul that he is keen to grasp hold of with both hands (he was a cli
mber after all): “Although Art has been a hobby all my life and I regula
rly take commissions\, this is the first time I have exhibited my work bef
ore the public and I am really excited by the prospect of exhibiting at th
e ArtHouse. Having only recently moved into Southport\, with my wife Pauli
ne and children\, Alan and Christina\, I am now looking forward to integra
ting more with the local art community.”\n\nPaul’s double portrait of
“The Queen” will be on display\, alongside other more recent paintings
and drawings\, in his Artist of the Month retrospective from 1st - 29th F
 ebruary at SCA/ArtHouse\, 65 Eastbank Street (Tues thro Fri 10.00 – 15.0
 0 and Sat 11.00 – 16.00).
