SUMMARY:Liverpool: Art in Windows: Sculpture installation: Gestures and Fri
 end/Foe
DESCRIPTION:Title: Sculpture installation: Gestures and Friend/Foe\nDates:
  25 August - 30 September\, 2017\nTimes: Dawn to 11pm (viewing from stree
 t)\nLocation: 5 Bold Place\, Liverpool\, L1 9DN\nContact: email: info@aiwl
iverpool.org  phone: 07913449035\n\nArt In Windows is proud to unveil its
inaugural show in Liverpool. Installed in windows in an empty\, listed bu
 ilding over-looking St Luke’s Church\, Liverpool-based artist Adrian Jea
ns has created two works that reflect upon our use of hands as a form of c
ommunication.\n\nFascinated by official sign language\; mannered hand gest
ures in paintings and sculptures\; and more elusive hand gestures that we
spontaneously and subconsciously perform much of the time\, Jeans uses a r
ange to sculptures of his own hand to highlight the subtle but forceful vi
sual power of hand gestures\, as well as their subtle variations and poten
tial for ambiguity.\n\nIn Friend/Foe\, for example\, Jeans continually rot
ates a hand with two fingers sticking up so that it playfully\, but insist
ently\, alternates between declarations of love and hate: a simple but cle
ver play upon how the meaning of a gesture can subtly change or invert com
pletely\, depending on its context: whether that be cultural\, psychologic
al or physical. The effect of Friend/Foe is humour\, but tempered with an
undercurrent of potential menace.\n\nArt In Windows\n\nArt In Windows is a
n organisation that works with landlords and artists to commission and cur
ate temporary and permanent art works for display in empty windows in and
 around Liverpool. www.artinwindows.org
