SUMMARY:Alternator Studio & Project Space: Alternator Studios: Coptic Stitc
h workshop with NY based artist Debra Eck
DESCRIPTION:Coptic Stitch workshop with NY based artist Debra Eck\nSunday 1
 3th August 1.30 – 4pm.  Alternator Studios\, Balls Road East\, Birken
 head.\n£25 per person.   Materials provided.\nTo book a place\, contact
  Wendy Williams : wendwilluk@yahoo.co.uk\n\nWorkshop Description\n\nCopti
c binding or Coptic sewing comprises methods of bookbinding employed by ea
rly Christians in Egypt and marks the transition from scroll texts to the
book as we think of it today. The style was used from the 2nd century AD t
 o the 11th century\, and has experienced a revival as a practical non-adhe
sive style of binding for book artists.\n\nCoptic bindings\, the first tru
e codices\, are characterized by one or more sections of parchment\, papyr
us\, or paper sewn through their folds\, and attached to each other with c
hain stitch sewing across the spine\, rather than to the thongs or cords r
unning across the spine that characterise European bindings from the 8th c
entury onwards.\n\nWorkshop participants will recycle discarded library bo
oks\, using simple tools and readily available materials. The resulting jo
urnal/sketchbook opens completely flat\, perhaps the most attractive featu
re of the Coptic style of binding. We will be leaving the spine uncovered
although later European versions sometimes have leather covered spines.\n\

n artist who works primarily with paper\, text and thread. She is most wel
l known in the book arts community for her translations of historic embroi
dery designs into functional binding designs. Originally from Essex in the

ual Culture from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle (UK). She teac
