Edge of The Known World:New Landscapes from China and St Kilda exhibition at Corke Art Gallery.
We managed to catch this exhibition on the last day, we were glad that we did.
Jenkin’s 170cm x 260cm painting ‘Container Island’ depicts imagery of the eerie landscape of the Yangshan Deep Water Port in Shanghai, the largest container port in the world, where she visited during her residency with Chinese European Art Center, Xiamen, China.
John Elcock’s complete set of new works consisting of paintings and sculptures was inspired by St Kilda, whose islands situated 45 miles west of the Outer Hebrides form the remotest part of the British Isles.
‘A Liverpool Mailboat’: Kildans would send word to the outside world by means of a crude wooden ‘boat’ which would be swept out into the Atlantic, carrying the messages to reach by chance the shores of Scotland or Norway. This work is a modern rendition of the mailboat fit for the River Mersey.
This exhibition has now finished and the gallery is closed until early September 2015.
