SHIFT 2017 – Digital Artist Brief

SHIFT is a year of diverse programming taking place across Cheshire East throughout 2017. The programme will feature exhibitions, workshops + events, culminating in a symposium at the end of the year. Cheshire East Council invites expressions of interest from artists, designers + makers engaged with the theory + practice of innovative digital arts + research as part of the SHIFT Programme 2017. We are interested in exploring themes of science including biotechnologies, future healthcare + space, smart cities or towns in both a rural + urban context, and future making skills.

Proposals can range from online work to installations in the public realm. Artists will be supported by members of the SHIFT team. Installations / exhibitions will be presented across Cheshire East sites or online during 2017. Sites could range from historical properties to empty shops in the area. We are interested in hearing from artists who have:

  • Innovative digital practice at the heart of their work
  • Knowledge of Cheshire East, of the rural + urban environment of the borough
  • Experience of working with public engagement / participation at its heart by engaging with our target groups: Children & Young People, Adults (The Public), Adults – Sector Led (Professional Development)
  • Experience of exhibiting in non-gallery spaces
  • A focus on audience participation and engagement in digital art/media

Budget for commissions range from £2,000 to £10,000 to include all fees, design, production and installation.

Aims of the SHIFT Programme:

  • Raise awareness of the Digital and Creative sector in Cheshire East
  • Raise aspirations & Celebrate digital art and maker culture in Cheshire East
  • Stimulate debate on the role of the Creative and Digital sector in quality of place
  • Facilitate access to best practice in Creative and Digital sectors
  • Support and develop new talent and people’s skills and abilities through training and education opportunities
  • Improve digital skill base & Support local economic growth in the sector
  • Deliver high quality digital / maker activities and exhibitions
  • Collaborate with leading digital arts organisations to develop + embed partnerships for the year and beyond
  • Creating compelling art bridging science + technology; crafts, arts + culture through a year of activity

To apply, please send a short summary of your proposed artwork identifying which objectives your proposal will meet, and how this will be achieved, with no more than 4 drawings or images to support your proposal plus a CV + short biography. Please supply a budget breakdown. Artists are invited to further discuss their proposal with the selection panel w/c 30 January 2017.
