Portraits commission, Bolton Museum and Art Gallery

Bolton Museum is inviting submissions for a painting commission for its new galleries of ancient Egypt. The Portraits Wall within the new galleries will commemorate four key figures from the establishment of Bolton Museum and its world class collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts: Annie Barlow, Samuel Taylor Chadwick, and William and Thomas Midgley.

The museum is seeking submissions in a variety of styles and media, though not 3D. The commissioned portraits could be realistic in style or could take a more stylised and even caricatural approach, using photographs from the museum collection as their starting point. The completed portraits will enter the museum’s permanent collections, to sit alongside works by such masters of the genre as William Orpen, Jacob Epstein, Laura Knight, Andy Warhol and Christian Hook.

Submission Procedure

For the initial stage of the process we ask you to provide us with a brief statement outlining how you would approach the portrait commission and examples of past work. We can provide a PDF document with more information about the commission including photographs of the four subjects. Please contact Matthew Watson at the email address provided if you would like a copy of the PDF document.

The fee for the commission has been set at £1,000 per portrait or £4,000 for the group of four portraits.

The finished pieces should be no more than 800 mm high and 600 mm wide.

Deadline for submissions is Friday 22 September 2017.

The deadline for the completed portraits is Friday 23 February 2018.

Submissions should be sent to:
