Darwen Market Square Artist Commission:

Public Art Brief for Darwen Market Square Public Realm Scheme

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is investing £1.5 million in the future of Darwen Town Centre by creating a fantastic public space right in the heart of the town. We are inviting proposals from experienced metalwork artists to work with the regeneration team to create designs for the public art within the Darwen Market Square scheme. The artists should involve the local community during the design process. The artwork needs to be inspired by Darwen’s heritage whilst being future looking and inspiring. The artwork should also enable people to enjoy the space and take part in reflection, relaxation and recreation.

The work must be designed and created between April + October 2018. The artist will mainly be working with a local heritage group to develop the artwork design, linking with their local history research on WWI. There may be opportunities to work with the wider community, businesses and school groups. The end result should include a permanent piece of public art with the heart of Darwen’s new Market Square and designs for windows, street furniture and a metal gate within the scheme. The artist will then oversee the creation and installation of the designs within the public realm scheme before November 2018.

Fee £5,000

The fee will cover all artist(s) fees, working with heritage groups and others groups as needed, overseeing the creation and installation, travel, accommodation and expenses. A separate budget will be set aside for the fabrication.

The selected artist(s) will need to commence work swiftly, working with local manufacturers to achieve completion before November 2018.

The selected artist(s) should have their own public liability + professional indemnity insurance.
