Painting

statement:

I am a painter based in liverpool and I worked in a studio at the Bluecoat Art Centre from 1999 until 2005 and now work from home.

My work has always been based around my local surroundings and the city centre of Liverpool. I use photographs as a starting point for my paintings. My busy scenes of The M62, flyovers and motorways around my home have been a part of my life and work for a long time. They are essentially about movement, people and their journeys. Where are they going and where have they been? Their vehicles leave behind a trail of light. The signs on the tarmac, traffic lights and signposts illuminate the place giving this rather mundane area a sense of drama and energy. My most recent work has involved the Royal Hospital and views of the city.

I have also focussed on the area surrounding Southport Beach, which has seen me take a lighter direction. The sky has become the focus for creating the drama and I hope to capture the wide open space, cold light and the wind which is often present there.
