Sudley House which is part of National Museums Liverpool re-opens tomorrow (Saturday May 26 2007) and we were fortunate to have a preview today with a tour of the splendid rooms and artworks by none other than George Holt himself (played by Dr Paul O’Keeffe of course).
It was very entertaining and informative, its the first time I’ve had a proper look around the place, its looking great at the moment with the gardens in full bloom and the rooms a lot brighter, newly painted and recarpeted.
There has always been a lift but the ancient oak-panelled thing has been replaced a modern glass elevator which looks a bit odd next to the Burne-Jones watercolour of an Angel Playing a Flageolet.
Though not original, the black range in the Tea Room is interesting. Upstairs there’s the costume room, childrens rooms and a temporary exhibition space currently showing a modified version of the Merchant Palaces collection of old photographs on the local mansions.
