Pipilotti Rist on the BBC Big Screen And FACT

Exhibition at FACT 27 June to 31 August 2008

The UK premiere of a work by one of Europe’s leading artists, Pipilotti Rist, will be exhibited in Liverpool city centre for the duration of the artist’s solo show at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology). Open My Glade, which was originally commissioned for Times Square in New York in 2000, will be broadcast on the BBC Big Screen in Clayton Square from 30 June until 31 August 2008.

In the one-minute film, a woman – the artist – presses her face hard against the surface of the screen, smearing her makeup, looking as though she is trying to escape through it. With the movement in slow-motion, the film offered something different amidst the bright lights and giant billboards in the centre of New York City when it was first shown. An excerpt from Open My Glade will also feature as part of a specially curated arts programme on the BBC Big Screen, called Sizemology, from Friday 13 June until Thursday 26 June, which explores the lingering perception of outdoor screens as giant TVs.

Open My Glade is coming to Liverpool as part of a major FACT exhibition of several works by Pipilotti Rist – including a second UK premiere, that of Gravity, Be My Friend (2007) – opening on 27 June until 31 August 2008 and with free entry.

Laura Sillars, FACT’s Head of Programme and curator of Pipilotti Rist’s exhibition says, “ The BBC Big Screen is the perfect location for Open My Glade. Its original spec in the media frenzied Times Square ensured the work would sit naturally amidst the urban grain. We hope that shoppers in Liverpool city centre will enjoy the intervention so much that they stop shopping, go home and dream.”

Born in 1962, Pipilotti Rist is famed for her visually stunning sculptural video installations and is one of the most prominent artists working today. Her exhibition at FACT will challenge the way we look at art, physically as well as emotionally; be it lying on the floor watching a projection on the ceiling, perched on oversized furniture or peering through a crack on the floor. Bursting onto the international art scene in the late 1980s with works inspired by visual art, music, architecture and social politics, Pipilotti Rist’s work celebrates the power of self-invention and the creation of new rules for humans living together, she mixes fantasy and the everyday in a
humorous and kaleidoscopic exploration of the human voice and body in contemporary culture.
