Art project to help disadvantaged youngsters
The sky’s the limit for a group of young artists who are set to exhibit work showing unique vantage points of some of Liverpool’s iconic buildings and landmarks, thanks to a project backed by English Heritage.
‘Look up Liverpool’ premieres this Friday August 24 at St George’s Hall in Liverpool and will showcase photographic work by young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds who took part in the arts scheme.
The project was run by the Liverpool-based charity Yellow House, which works with young people facing barriers to education through disadvantage or disability. The scheme has been funded by English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Liverpool Culture Company and various other bodies.
Young people were sent out onto the city’s famous streets armed with high quality digital cameras and asked to photograph Liverpool from the unique vantage point of ‘looking upwards’, capturing the unusual architectural features of buildings that are often overlooked at street level.
Together, they uncovered some of the city’s hidden gems, including drawings of men wearing speed goggles on the Mersey Tunnel ventilation shaft, and a carving of a ship sailing into the sunset on a building on Castle Street once owned by the Maritime Insurance Company.
Their achievements are even more remarkable because a laptop containing all of their photographic work was stolen from the Yellow House project in March.
English Heritage provided new equipment within the week, allowing the youths to begin working on the project again almost immediately.
