Local Artist, Maggie Izzard from Nantwhich in Cheshire has made it through to the final stage of this year’s Art Liberating Lives exhibition, Sue Ryder Care’s signature event in London.

Maggie started her creative career, studying graphic design and printing in Manchester and London but has since changed direction to pursue her interest in portraiture. She started taking on commissions and painting local people in her bid to show that the opportunity to have a portrait painted is open to everybody.

The subject of her painting is a local gentleman called Paul, who works as a cobbler in Timpson Shoe Repairs. He is a figure that is known by many local residents as he still does a trade that is central to life in the town, being proud of the job and the good service. Maggie says of the painting ‘It is liberating and exciting for me, it’s great to build up a person’s portrait, show an air and feeling that belong to the sitter and create something unique and yet recognisable.’

Maggie’s pastel and charcoal portrait, ‘Paul the Cobbler’ has made it through two selection stages and will be part of this year’s Art Liberating Lives exhibition this December. 35% of proceeds from artwork sold will go towards supporting Sue Ryder Care, the health care charity that delivers quality care for those living with end of life and long-term conditions including; Cancer, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Huntingdon’s Disease, Parkinson’s disease and Motor Neurone Disease.

Maggie says ‘I try to have a work of art on display at least once or twice a year and Art Liberating Lives was a challenging opportunity and one for a very good cause of helping to raise funds for Sue Ryder Care. It’s a fantastic opportunity and hopefully there will be more to follow.

Art Liberating Lives will take place at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London from 16-20th December 2009.
