A major collection of rare images depicting the influence of Italian style on film. The exhibition has been curated with Peroni Nastro Azzurro by celebrated top photographer Rankin and Italian fashion writer, film expert and cultural commentator Anna Battista.

The exhibition will run for five days at FACT then will move on to tour another seven UK cities.

The Peroni Collection – Italian Style on the Silver Screen explores the relationship between Italian fashion design and its continual influence on film making, image making and characterisation. The exhibition will feature rare and never seen before images from the cinematic world.

The show references not only classic Italian films like La Dolce Vita and Bellissima, but also more recent titles (including American Psycho and Romanzo criminale). The images, taken from classic Italian film and fashion archives from around the world, showcase the beauty of Italian style on celluloid.

Peroni-Italian Style on the Silver Screen curator and iconic photographer Rankin comments:
“The influence that Italian film has had on me is significant. Cinema Paradiso is without question, my favourite film of all time and has had a profound impact on my life both personally and professionally.  The themes and inherent style within the story never fail to move me just as much as they did the first time, and as a piece of work, it has inspired me to move into film as well as photography. It is inspiring to be part of this exhibition and solidify my connection to a genre which is so important to me”.

Fashion writer, co curator and cultural commentator Anna Battista says of the show:
“In Italy, fashion and cinema have always had a huge influence on each other creatively: they feed each other.  When the two are brought together with the artistry and skill that this exhibition showcases, they have the power to arouse real depth of emotion on the screen.

“They say that behind every great film there is a great director.  In this exhibition, visitors will discover that those directors’ visions are often realised through great costumes and the inspiring fashion moments they create”.

Jason Maling at Peroni Nastro Azzurro commented:
“Peroni Nastro Azzurro is proud to be co-curator of such an important exhibition in the UK.  Italian style is a meeting of understated beauty and personality, sophistication and practicality, craftsmanship and flair – sentiments that we at Peroni Nastro Azzurro share.  Through the selection of stunning images, this exhibition will give viewers a rich and colourful snapshot of Italian style and grace – as it has been captured on film”.

The collection has been sourced from different archives including the British Film Institute, the Florence-based Ferragamo Museum and the Archivio Storico Foto Locchi, the Rome-based Fondazione Micol Fontana, the Archivio Storico Fernanda Gattinoni and the Archivo Storico del Cinema, and the Centro Cinema Città di Cesena.
