Liverpool artwork of the week No. 9. ‘A View from the Garden’ by Laura Baxter at the Bluecoat Display Centre until April 19 2008
Part of the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone – Portfolio’ exhibition at the Display Centre in Hanover Street
Laura Baxter makes precious jewellery, wall panels and decorative metal screens inspired by botanical forms. Twigs, buds, blossom and leaf structures are abstracted and magnified at different scales to create intricate graphic silhouettes of nature. Profile, shadow and silhouette play a major part in the work, casting duplicate images of plants and delicate shadows of foliage in works that explore the themes of scattering, layering and repetition.
The large scale works are a natural progression from Baxter’s background in jewellery making. Her materials include brass, copper, steel, oxidised silver, gold and glass. She constructs the
work using a combination of techniques including hand forging, cutting, shaping and soldering combined with laser cutting and welding, and a jeweller’s eye for detail. The resulting work has
received numerous awards and commissions in the UK, Japan and the USA.
