Artwork of the Week – Bryan Biggs

Liverpool artwork of the week 2011-03. ‘Withdrawn & I’ Ink and Mixed Media 2006/7 by Bryan Biggs in Quartered, Drawn and Hung at the Cornerstone, 19 November 2010 – 18 February 2011.

This excellent exhibition of ‘Drawing by Definition, Concept and Practice’ features many fine works including this large piece by Bryan Biggs.

Bryan’s statement..
‘I have always drawn. It is the simplest, most direct form of art-making, but often the complex to fathom. For me it is about combining skill with intuition, delighting in chance, mark-making whilst anchoring the drawing with symbolic motifs, often a head, and words. In his essay ‘Why I Write’, George Orwell articulated four motives for writing: sheer egoism, aesthetic enthusiasm, historical impulse and political purpose, concluding that without the last of these the result is lifeless. Drawing allows a formal freedom and delight, but a concern with injustice provides equal compulsion for why I draw.’
