Alternative Dramaturgies informed by a d/Deaf and Disability Perspective, a day-long symposium.

North West Disability Arts Forum (NWDAF) in partnership with Kaite O’Reilly (Arts and Humanities Research Council Creative Fellow) and Liverpool Hope University will host the symposium on Monday 6th November 2006 (10am-5pm), at Liverpool Hope University, Deanery of Arts and Humanities, The Cornerstone, Haigh Street, Liverpool L3 8QB.
The symposium will be a day long event led by Disabled and d/Deaf practitioners/artists and academics, including papers, presentations, work demonstrations and panel discussions. The symposium will be British Sign Language interpreted by Siobhan Rox and Alex McDonald, and audio described by Anne Hornsby.
This will be the second of two regional symposia with international contributors. The first took place in the South West in March 2006, part of Kaite O’Reilly’s AHRC Creative Fellowship 2003-6 at the School of Performance Arts, Exeter University, where she undertook practice based research into ‘Alternative Dramaturgies informed by a d/Deaf and Disability perspective’. She has defined ’Alternative Dramaturgies’ as the processes, structures, content and form which reinvent, subvert or critique ‘traditional’ or ’conventional’ routes (for which read mainstream, hearing and non-disabled).
Key questions explored will include: –
1. How do alternative dramaturgies subvert or re-invent conventional dramaturgies?
2. What can the mainstream learn from a d/Deaf and Disability perspective regarding performance practice – process and product?
3. How might developments (e.g. integrated sign interpretation, innovations in form and process) impact on or be included into mainstream practice?
4. Do inclusive practices within the mainstream dilute d/Deaf and Disability cultural identity?

This North West regional symposium will be of interest to practitioners working in the performing arts, educators and learners, theatre programmers, artistic directors and d/Deaf and Disabled artists/people. It will be of significant interest to academics and students involved in Disability Performance Studies and emerging/established Disability artists.
