“MOTHERS” is curated by Harry Pye. Harry originally commissioned 100 notable artists to create
works representing their mothers, and the Art Steering Group of the Wirral Festival of Firsts has
been able to bring 50 of these art works to Hoylake for the Festival, including works by Grayson
Perry, Bob and Roberta Smith, Vic Reeves, Chantel Joffe, Adam Dant, Neil Innes, Lee Maelzer and
Mat Humphrey, among many others.
In addition to the original art works shown in Harry Pye’s exhibition, the Wirral Festival of Firsts has
invited a number of people to illustrate their own mothers on an A5 board and to sign their pictures
on the back. These special “My Mothers” will be on sale during the exhibition for a minimum of £10
(and preferably a lot more!). All proceeds will go to Claire House. You could purchase a work by a
celebrity or by your next door neighbour, but you won’t know until you buy!
This event is to be found at the New Holiday Inn Express, Hoylake and runs from 24th June – 8th July
2012, one of many free events at the festival.
The Festival is indebted to Harry Pye, Professor Neil Grant of the University of Chester, Colin
Simpson of the Williamson Art Gallery and John Brown of The Holiday Inn Express Hoylake for their
