Williamson – Christine Watson

Exhibition ImageJourney, Travel & Arrival – Christine Watson
March 1 to April 13 2008

The Chester-based artist makes small, highly coloured works using wax to give depth and substance to her strangely emotional and spiritual subjects. They are highly worked over, often for several years, in an effort to achieve the balance the artist seeks.

Christine received her training over 20 years ago at
traditional long established Art Schools in Birmingham and
London. She sees her work as following in the great colour
legacy of Gauguin Bonnard & Matisse. The paintings are
scraped down and reworked a number of times using oil and
beeswax. They are powerful reflective works that hold a
meditative presence.

These are works of joy and peaceful optimism. The Artist is
deeply influenced by medieval painting where pure colour
represents volume space and light in harmony as a flat
surface. Each painting is worked on many times slowly
maturing to a simplified essence.
