Deadline: Friday 8 April 2016.
Artist Village 2016
Open call – Culture Lab, residency and Commissions
Artist Village is a project in which 8 visual artists will get the chance to spend time in Chalkwell Park, developing new ambitious work to be experienced within the outdoor festival context of Village Green 2016 – an annual multi-arts festival run by Metal in Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea.
Now in its 8th year, Village Green attracts 25k people from all ages and backgrounds who enjoy an eclectic line up of music, poetry, theatre, dance, workshops, spoken word (and more) within the beautiful setting of Chalkwell Park. Artist Village will provide a strong visual layer to the festival experience for all of these people and will provide exposure to huge audiences for all artists involved.
Participating artists will enter into a focussed and immersive experience where they are able to try something new in an environment completely different to traditional white cube settings. The artworks created will respond not only to natural features of the park and infrastructure of the festival (stages, tents etc), but will also consider the way audiences are able to encounter and interact with them.
This opportunity is open to all artists based in UK, working in any discipline. 6 artists have already been invited to take part in Artist Village 2016, however we are looking to select two artists via open submission process to join the group – taking part in a Culture LAB, build week and developing work to be exhibited within the context of Village Green Festival 2015.
Culture Lab and Build Week come with a combined fee of £850 per artist for taking part in the process, plus full board and accommodation. There will also be £500 for materials/equipment hire. Selected artists are required to attend the Culture LAB at Metal in Southend (30th May – 3rd June 2016) and festival build-up week (4th – 10th July).
