University of Liverpool – Stuart Sutcliffe

imageStuart Sutcliffe Retrospective: 21 August 2008 – ENDS SATURDAY 31 January 2009
This exhibition draws on the collection of the Stuart Sutcliffe Estate and charts the development of his style.
Early works from his days at Prescot Grammar School will be seen, together with material produced at the School of Art.

Stuart Sutcliffe showed an early artistic ability, gaining entry to the Liverpool School of Art aged 16. There he met John Lennon, who was recruiting a bass player for his band.

By acquiring a guitar, Sutcliffe joined the Beatles. He accompanied them on their Hamburg tour in 1960, remaining in the city with his girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr at its close. He died of a brain haemorrhage on 10 April 1962. Despite his tragically early death, Sutcliffe produced an extensive body of work.

This exhibition draws on the collection of the Stuart Sutcliffe Estate and charts the development of his style. Early works from his days at Prescott Grammar School will be seen, together with material produced at the School of Art. Of particular note is an impressive group of abstract oils painted in Hamburg.
