Enjoy a Brazil-iant evening at the movies as Brazilica announces a trio of Brazilian themed films as part of this year’s 9 day festival celebrating Brazilian culture, with films leading up to the main carnival day on Saturday 19 July.

On Mon 14 July the first movie on the bill will certainly whet audience’s appetite; Estomago follows the highs and lows of Raimundo Donato. In the great restaurant of life there are those who eat and those who get eaten, and Raimundo cooks in order to survive his journey from down and out, to celebrated chef, to prison convict. Featured at the 2008 Raindance Festival, do not miss out on this fabulous film which is being screened at The Brink.

Then City of God 10 years later is showing at FACT on Wed 16 July. This documentary picks up with the actors from the 2002 Brazilian crime drama film City of God which depicts the growth of organized crime in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s. Filmed 10 years after the Oscar-nominated movie’s release, find out exactly what came of the stars of the movie Alice Braga, Seu Jorge,Leandro Firmino, Douglas Silva and Thiago Martins and learn of their mixed fortunes over the last decade.

Finally rounding off the third film on Thu 17 July, one of Brazil’s most significant movements is explored in Tropicalia. Showing at The Brink, in this powerful documentary director Mercelo Machado explores the scene and its key players of the Tropicalia movement; born in the late 60’s it used music and visual arts as a voice to confront the cultural and political establishment. With fascinating archive material including stunning images and music, it documents the iconic and era changing time in Brazil’s history which created a sound never before heard in Brazil, and still inspires western musicians today.

So grab your popcorn and drinks and enjoy these fantastic free additions to this year’s jam-packed programme of events, in what is certain to be the best Brazilica Festival ever.
