Although its introspective nature prompted his rejection of painting
in the 1970’s as “elitist”, abstract art is now a major area of
experimentation for Couturier. “Without external references,” he
says, “I find that abstract imagery can “speak”, through purely
visual means, of things beyond imagination, of things yet to be
articulated.”
In stark contrast Couturier also pursues representational themes in
paint, graphics, prints, 3D and video pieces. But where the abstract
work has a metaphysical dimension, the representational work is rooted
in an all too material and human world.
This provocative, stimulating and humorous show threads these two
contradictory strands together for the first time to explore their
contrasts, continuities and inconsistencie
