Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio was commissioned in celebration of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s 150th anniversary in 1991. Paul McCartney collaborated with Carl Davis in composing the work. It was McCartney’s first official foray into classical music and has spent many weeks atop the classical charts worldwide.

The oratorio follows the life of Shanty (an obvious McCartney stand-in) from his World War II-era birth and boyhood to his working-class adulthood and troubled marriage, before concluding on a sublimely transcendent note celebrating the everyday poetry of the common man.
