Overview
House of Memories is a highly successful dementia awareness programme designed by National Museums Liverpool to promote compassion, respect and dignity in care to support people living with dementia, their carers and families.

The programme enables National Museums Liverpool (NML) and the national health and social care sector, to work together to deliver an imaginative and accessible dementia awareness experience. Created in 2012, the initiative provides participants with memory activities and resources inspired by NML’s world class museum collections, enabling greater understanding of how information about a person’s history and life experience can be a valuable tool for positive communication and engagement.

Activities include an interactive training day with creative resources (to take back into domiciliary, residential and acute settings) and access to a free object loan service and digital memory app.

Programme Development 2016-2017
House of Memories is designed to play a national role and has successfully demonstrated the value of cultural partnership with the health sector. NML wishes to expand the programme to develop a continued and sustainable future, through a commercial strand delivered in parallel to the existing public grant model. It is envisaged that this would enable NML to scale-up the programme across the whole health economy, to create seamless provision across primary, secondary and tertiary health sectors, and in the community. The approach would uniquely bring together family care, social care and hospital care to ensure sustainability.

The House of Memories plans to develop the following programme strands and resources:

  • A licensed workforce training resource (with health economy options)
  • Dedicated website to include:
    -‘dementia awareness’ information portal
-national health and museum ‘dementia friendly’ activities
-health and wellbeing information portal (linking to public and charity provision)
    -research activity
  • A national Family Carers training day to provide basic knowledge about the various forms of dementia and practical memory resources for family carers
  • Acute care hospital based train the trainer model
  • New partnership programme models across National Museums Liverpool’s venues.
  • UK Veterans programme to engage Veterans living with dementia, their families and Armed Forces charities
  • US partnership with Minnesota National Historical Society to develop a model for the US museum sector
  • A three year research programme is also proposed with John Moores University, to explore the positive impact of House of Memories delivered across the whole health economy
