Project Curator Collecting Cultures

International Slavery Museum

Payband 4

Hours: 3 days per week

Basis: Maternity cover until 15 February 2019 or sooner if the post holder returns

Purpose and Objectives

  • To assist in the delivery the International Slavery Museum’s Transatlantic and Contemporary Slavery Collecting Project.
  • To research and identify gaps in the International Slavery Museum collections and displays.
  • To develop a planned programme of targeted purchase focussing on transatlantic slavery and slavery in the contemporary world.
  • To assist with the development, delivery of associated content and research for the acquisitions and to support public programming around the acquisitions.
  • To support the development of interpretation around the newly acquired transatlantic slavery and contemporary slavery collections
  • Further develop and inform the International Slavery Museum’s collections policy.
  • To assist with the programming of the International Slavery Museum acquisitions and collections, working closely with colleagues in Education, Communities and Exhibitions.
  • To maintain and develop external partnerships with NGOs’ and other human rights related museums and organisations such as Anti-Slavery International.
  • To maintain and develop networks and relationships with private collectors; auction houses; galleries, NGO’s, museums, partners and stakeholders.
  • To develop personal academic and research expertise within the areas of responsibility.

Main Duties

  • To research, identify and acquire objects and heritage items that develop ISM’s collections in the areas of transatlantic and contemporary forms of slavery.
  • To monitor potential sources of acquisitions, maintain contacts and awareness of potential sources of material. To research, advise and make recommendations to the Head of the Museum for purchases and acquisition of objects.
  • To coordinate and administer the project including meetings, financial transactions, internal and external reporting.
  • To provide curatorial care, including the documentation, cataloguing, display, storage and monitoring of conservation requirements for items within the specialist area of responsibility, in accordance with National Museums Liverpool policy and audit arrangements and ensuring coherence towards corporate systems and procedures and the attainment of stated targets.
  • Work with IS Department to link the objects to Mimsy and other NML online collection related initiatives such as the image management system.
  • To monitor and inform ISM’s Collections Development Plan. Further develop ISM’s transatlantic and contemporary slavery collections.
  • To develop relationship and contact with private collectors; auction houses; galleries, NGO’s, museums, community organisations, external human rights related organisations such as NGO’s partners and stakeholders.
  • To assist in the public programming and promotion of the objects and Transatlantic and Contemporary Slavery Collecting Project by supporting marketing, design, web team, education and community colleagues, including advising on the preparation of education and interpretative material.
  • To undertake scholarly research within the specialist area of the collections.
  • To represent the museum at professional meetings; conferences to obtain views, give advice, consult with partners and present research as appropriate.
  • To answer complex and sensitive written and oral enquiries relating to the collections and specialist subject area.
  • To develop, where appropriate, content for and support the delivery of special exhibitions and displays around the objects and heritage items.
  • To make recommendations to the Head of the Museum and the Curator of ISM on the loan of objects from the collection and, in conjunction with the Divisional Registrar, to ensure that appropriate loan documentation is completed.

  • To work with volunteers; work placement students; researchers and academic partners.
  • To adhere to National Museums Liverpool’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • To undertake other duties as requested by the Head of the Museum such as meetings representing ISM, the Transatlantic and Contemporary Slavery Collecting Project and Head of the Museum; evening and weekend work and attending internal and external events such as the Centre for the Study of International Slavery CSIS seminar series.
  • Regular attendance and involvement in ISM internal meetings and Transatlantic and Contemporary Slavery Collecting Project team meetings and external meetings.
  • To show the highest integrity and confidentiality in the pursuance of these duties.
