Pedal-Powered Cinema at FACT

Someone out there is not pedalling hard enough – it took me ages to get into my own website so I could post this.

Looks like fun but also hard work.

FACT hosts the UK’s ONLY cycle-powered cinema

Saturday 01 August 2009, The Box, 12pm to 5pm, FREE

FACT will host the UK’s ONLY cycle-powered cinema in a special day-long participatory film screening and event. On 1 August, audiences will be invited to get on specially rigged bicycles and pedal their way to the final credits.

The Magnificent Revolution’s pedal-powered cinema system uses up to 10 bikes and 20 legs to power 600W of audio-visual equipment for screening films or projections. An interactive feedback system informs the cyclists and the audience about how much power they’re generating. When the energy supply is running low (i.e. people aren’t pedaling hard enough) a LED lighting kicks in and the ambient light changes colour. No pedaling, no film; nice and simple!
The films being screened will be a selection of bicycle-related Super 8 films, coprogrammed by FACT and Straight 8 – some of which premiered at Cannes earlier this Summer.
