Open Call for Lead Artist – Culture Action Llandudno

Deadline: Friday 12 February 2016.

Culture Action Llandudno (CIC) or CALL is a newly formed Social Enterprise, with culture –led regeneration central to its ethos.

Our vision is to take Llandudno and its “Lost Spaces”, disused /derelict buildings and plots of land, unloved estates, and through thought provoking and exciting programming develop discussion which will ultimately lead to them being reimagined and revitalized in a way that benefits all.

The dialogue we intend to create around these “Lost Spaces” will become pivotal to the development of urban planning, the cultural offer, opportunities and engagement within the town.

What do we intend to do?

  • Work with local, regional, national and international artists and organisations, bringing new and experimental ideas of culture and multi-disciplinary working to the region.
  • Work with communities and develop their sense of ownership and excitement about cultural engagement.
  • Create distinctive opportunities for cultural dialogue and exchange, for innovative cultural involvement and appreciation.
  • Collaborate with strategic cross sector partners, instigating dialogues and networks that will enable change and sustainability.
  • Involve the widest possible remit of stakeholders in a program of distinctive and innovative cultural activity, championing an approach that sees the development of this dialogue becoming intrinsic to all aspects of the future of the town.

We see this as an opportunity to do something original and exciting which in the longterm could lead to the town becoming a key cultural destination in the North West, benefiting the local economy and attracting cultural tourism.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a lead artist for our new project: the Freehaus Art School. It will take place at 26 Augusta Street, Llandudno ( formerly Haus of Helfa).

The lead artist will curate a monthly program of residencies, events and learning/participatory activities , between April and September 2016, in conjunction with the CALL team.

Central to our approach is a commitment to reactivate the former social and cultural functions of the building. Its affiliated public programme will aspire to build a community of interest and to foster social, cultural and intellectual exchanges between people from all walks of life.

Based on our on-going research, emphasising cooperation and experimentation, this initiative will be set up to facilitate learning and to provide an informal environment for the sharing of knowledge and skills between artists, local residents and the broader public. Our “study programme” will support the artistic and professional development of a wide variety of stakeholders through studio provision, tuition from international and local practitioners, theorists and curators and the production of locally focussed projects and products. The ethos of the school advocates that cultural practice can have relevance to anyone at any level.
