“Superscope seeks to re-invigorate ‘end-game’ reductive painting by exploding the medium of paint outwards. Within this re-contextualisation (which acknowledges the recent histories of ‘support/surface’ and ‘post-process’ painting) the artists here both reference and challenge what it ‘means’ to construct a painting within the framework of a ‘layer upon layer’ activity.” – press release.
Brendan Lyons’ contribution to this group show is the floor based painting “N-Ogg”. What appears to be a a couple of discarded and graffitied corrugated metal sheets, surrounded by canvas sacks and other waste elements – in fact consists of just paint on canvas. One large sheet of canvas, and two canvas sacks, are placed on the floor, and everything else sitting on top is made entirely of paint. What appear to be 2 corrugated sheets, orange safety netting, black and blue bags, the bricks within the blue bag, tapes, text/logo on the sacks, and ‘dirt’, are in fact made of dried and unsupported paint alone.
