My World My Story Photography Project
In July this year Insight Photography will be working in conjunction with the charity Tanzed to deliver The “My World My Story” Project which is an international project that enables the participants to use photography to record their personal experiences with simple digital cameras. The project will be run with the participation of women and children from the rural villages of the Morogoro region of Tanzania. The young people taking part in this project will range from age 5 to 15.
The My World My Story project attempts to empower its participants by encouraging people who previously had little or no voice in their community to share their stories and identities with their neighbours locally and internationally.
The project aims to help individuals visualise and express the different aspects of their daily lives through photography by capturing images of personal, family, neighborhood and heritage. These workshops will culminate in an exhibition where the whole community will be invited. In order to raise funds and future awareness a book containing the images taken by the participants will be produced.
My World My Story will leave the skills to enable the participants to record their culture and everyday life for future generations. These skills will also enable them to take the lead role in shaping their future and also raise interest in and awareness of photography in general. In these challenging times it is imperative that we express our common human experience to ensure that we promote empathy and understanding of these culturally distant communities and bridge the gap between the ethnic, gender and class divide.
