Massive Horse Paintings at Aintree

Great to see another local artist winning a major commission. Anna was based at 50 Parr street but all the artists were evicted from there recently and as far as I know still looking for temporary residence.

Anna Benson graduated from John Moores University in 2003 with a degree in Fine Art. During her final year she concentrated on painting racehorses. The paintings for her degree show focused on the different aspects of steeple chasing, two of which were later exhibited in Aintree Racecourse during the 2004 Grand National.

Anna’s recent work was a commission for the new Equestrian Centre at Aintree Racecourse. The commission comprised of two 12 foot x 6 foot paintings and a 16 foot x 8 foot painting. This large painting is believed to be one of the largest equestrian pictures to have been painted in the UK in the last 200 years.

The large scale paintings (acrylic on canvas) were inspired by the skill and bravery of the horses and jockeys as they took on the formidable fences of the famous Grand National course. The paintings depict the glory of steeple chasing, and the excitement of this unique race.

The paintings are displayed at Aintree Racecourse’s Equestrian Centre.
