‘SIGNS OF WAR’ & ‘BRITISH WATCHTOWERS’

John Davies and Donovan Wylie explore public monuments of war. John Davies ‘Signs Of War’ look at  the old war monuments of the pas and focus on their interaction with their modern day surroundings. Where as Donovan Wylie’s ‘British Watchtowers’ lets us contemplate the abandonment of the the watchtowers along the Irish Border. Together their work reminds people of the loss of lives during war as well as question how a site can be defined after conflict and how the lays in its history is represented

PHIIPPE CONTI & WOJEK WILCZYK

Philippe Conti and Wojek Wilczky exhibiting work, which has been curated by John Davies come from a project in 2008 which was commissioned by Liverpool Culture Company as part of the Capital of Culture programme. The artists look at cities through different eyes.

PAUL SEAWRIGHT ‘CONFLICTING ACCOUNTS’ (ENGLISH PERMIERE) & VICTOR SLOAN

‘Conflicting Accounts’ by Paul Seawright plays with the idea of layering the narrative about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Looking at the, often conflicting, history of the Troubles, Seawright takes imagery found within the urban landscape of both parties, loyalist and protestant and nationalist and catholic and highlights the continuous writing and re-writing of history. Victor Sloan’s selection of work from the 1980’s and 1990’s plays with photography’s potential and pushes the physicality of the image in search of the true meaning of Northern Irelands difficult past.

JILL JENNINGS ‘RESTRISTED ACCESS’

Jill Jennings projected ‘Restricted Access’ contains some rarely seen imagery from the Long Kesh/ Maze prison in Northern Ireland. This exhibition, shown on slide show, lets us see the interiors of cells as decorated by the loyalist and republican prisoners before they were released in the mid 90’s. This exhibition gives a personal insight to the prisoner involved the Northern Ireland Troubles, an angle very rarely explored within this topic.

BOLTON DOCUMENTANRY PHOTOGRAPHY MA
Graduates from the University of Bolton MA course explore the topics within social documentary. Looking at issues such as migrant workers, the decline of manufacturing and marginalized communities.
