29 May – 13 June 2014
LJMU’s School of Art and Design’s annual Degree Show is a celebration of students’ graduating work, and the culmination of their studies held during a two-week exhibition.
Students studying for BA Architecture, BA Fashion, BA Fine Art, BA Graphic Design and Illustration, BA Interior Design, BA Popular Music Studies and Master of Architecture (MArch) will be displaying their work for assessment and for viewing by parents, friends and members of the public.
The Fashion team will be presenting the Graduate Fashion Show at 8:30, showcasing final graduate collections and a special project undertaken by second year students with local cotton manufacturer, Plexus Cotton Ltd (Liverpool).
The project is a competition run in conjunction with business and enterprise education charity, Young Enterprise and fashion students who have been asked to design, manufacture, style, photograph and exhibit a selection of innovative outfits using white sustainable cotton grown in Plexus Cotton’s 250,000 African smallholdings.
Plexus intends to produce cotton fabric from its raw cotton product, and LJMU’s level 5 students are contributing to the introduction of its move into fabric production with five collections based on emerging trends. The collaboration evolved as LJMU staff visited Plexus’s head office to conduct reviews, interviews and meetings with key Plexus employers, helping to build an understanding of the origins and ethos of Plexus as a company, and the importance of sustainability within design and cotton production.
The project will culminate in a creative static exhibition curated by Fashion Communication and History of Art students. The five collections will be the forerunner to the final year Graduate Fashion Show.
The judges for the competition, Paige Earlam from Plexus, Baroness Young, Alistair Guy (photographer) and Craig Lawrence (fashion designer), will award a £2,000 prize to the best design and £1,000 to the communication students.
This year’s show is being delivered in partnership with Andrew Collinge, whose graduates are styling Fashion Show models for the tenth year running.
