Liverpool’s Lantern Company will be exporting the city’s distinctive brand of creative genius to international audiences following a major commission in Hong Kong.

5 brand-new giant illuminated puppets and costumes will be created especially for the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation’s ‘Arts in Motion’ event in December. A small team of artists have just flown out to Hong Kong for a series of master classes with 30 professional art practitioners in preparation for the main event.

The commission marks a significant milestone for the Lantern Company, who have built an unrivalled reputation over ten years, not only for their superb creative artworks, but their commitment to working with fellow artists and communities.

Jo Pocock, Artistic Director said: “It’s a real honour to be asked to not only produce some new work for this incredible event, but to be invited to share our specialist  knowledge in a country such as Hong Kong, who have an incredible and ancient tradition of lantern making within their culture.

“This kind of recognition is a great reward for us as a company. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and one that looks set to continue to take our work to exciting new places.”

Over the past three years, the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation has introduced new exciting elements to the event by adding a thematic parade, creating a truly festive outdoor event that celebrates the vitality and diversity of the Hong Kong community.

The annual community arts event in Hong Kong now attracts 100,000 visitors  with the two-day fiesta featuring a variety of artistic activities that include sun dances, vibrant art stalls, a medley of dance performances, and the illuminated parade through the streets of Causeway Bay.

In addition to their international work, the Lantern Company continues to work extensively in the north west with the likes of the Halloween Lantern Parade for Liverpool City Council, and Liverpool One and Chester Zoo on their annual Christmas celebrations.
