Liverpool Cathedral Launches 2011 Photography Competition
Expert judges ask participants to capture ‘inspiring places’
Liverpool Cathedral’s third annual photography competition is open to entries from March 31st. A panel of expert judges, led by renowned photographer Mike McCartney, will ask people of all ages and abilities to capture ‘inspiring places’ across the city centre.
The 2011 Inspiring Places competition has three categories: In the Hope Street Area, In the City Centre, and, to celebrate the rebirth of one of the city’s most influential theatres, a new category for 2011 only: At the Everyman. What’s more, photographers are being invited to bring their cameras along to a series of free tours of the Everyman to capture the building ahead of its transformation into a twenty-first century performance space. See www.everymanplayhouse.com for tour dates and times.
There is plenty to inspire photographers around the city in 2011. As well as a category that reflects the firm rooting of the competition in the Hope Street area, photographers are encouraged to get around the city centre – this year marks the centenary of the iconic Royal Liver Building and the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool, as well as a range of spring and summer events on the waterfront.
Chair of Judges Mike McCartney (who has also been commissioned to exhibit at the Museum of Liverpool) is joined by award-winning Echo photographer Martin Birchall, Deputy Director of Art Galleries at National Museums Liverpool Sandra Penketh and Artistic Director at the Everyman Playhouse Gemma Bodinetz.
All entries will go on display at the Cathedral from 15th-18th September, where members of the public will be invited to choose a People’s Winner in addition to the judges’ awards.
Prizes include an overnight stay at the Hope Street Hotel, theatre tickets, meals, photographic workshops, tours, and vouchers for photographic equipment.
Details of all categories, the rules and entry form are available to download from the Cathedral website www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk from March 31st or application forms can be collected from Cathedral Welcome Desk. The closing date for entries is 5pm on August 26th.
