What Is A Valentine?
15 February – 3 March 2011
An Open exhibition where artists can tell us what a Valentine means to them. Saint Valentine was a Roman who was killed for his faith on February 14, 269 A.D. He is associated with love because he fell in love with the daughter of his jailer, and would pass notes to her. His final note, before he was executed, read ‘from your Valentine’.
From this the 14th February became associated with love and romance. Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.
