The School of the Arts in the University of Liverpool is pleased to invite applications for up to three Interdisciplinary PhD Graduate Teaching Assistants. The PhD project topics will need to involve collaboration across at least two of the Schools departments or disciplines. The successful applicants will receive financial assistance that comprises PhD tuition fee at the full-time Home/EU rate for three years and maintenance at the rate of £14,777. It is renewable each year based upon satisfactory progress. The post-holder will assist with a range of undergraduate teaching in a relevant department in the school. It is anticipated that teaching hours will be between 12-15 hours per week during term time (this includes preparation time and any necessary marking).
PhD research proposals will need to link theory, methods, or practice across research interests in two or more of the school’s main academic areas:

The School of the Arts
Founded in 2010 as part of the new Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences the School of the Arts is home to five academic departments:
- Communication and Media
The School of the Arts engages the imagination of its students and enhances their understanding of the world around them. For its staff, the School creates a fertile environment in which excellent research and teaching may flourish. In its wider civic context, the School reflects both the popular and classical music traditions and the cultural history of the Liverpool City region. The School also mirrors the City’s international reach – a national gateway to the world which has seen strong international ties and links evolve. One City twin, among many, is Shanghai. Unsurprisingly, the School celebrates and is nourished by the richness of these links and the opportunities flowing from them, whilst acknowledging the City’s role in all aspects of its history. Colleagues within the School maintain strong links with cultural institutions such as the Tate, National Museums of Liverpool and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and these links stretch across student experience, research and public engagement. At the heart of the School of the Arts is a vibrant research culture, with a strong collegial spirit and a commitment to providing an excellent student experience. For instance, the School is home to an unprecedented four BBC New Generation Thinkers. Especially important to the School is its engagement with wider audiences, which are reached through staff musical and literary performances, compositions and publications, or through exhibitions and building design in Architecture. As an inter-disciplinary School we are only just beginning to explore the possibilities emerging from the intersection these five subjects.
The School’s more than 2000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, drawn from over 50 countries, benefit from the University’s international links, its campuses in Liverpool, London and China, and produces world-leading and internationally excellent research. Our aim is to achieve and maintain the highest standard in research excellence while pursuing fruitful civic engagements, collaborative relationships and opportunities for knowledge exchange. In total the School has around 150 research active staff – many of whom are internationally known for their work – and circa 150 postgraduate research students, each of whom make a distinctive contribution to the School’s research profile. The University has a partner University campus in Suzhou, China. Xian Jiatong – Liverpool University (XJTLU) is rated number 1 of the 20 Sino-foreign Universities. The link presents a dynamic potential for exchanges and research links as well as the articulation of students from XJTLU to Liverpool. The School of the Arts has a founding relationship with XJTLU with a large cohort of students coming to us to study Communications and Media and Architecture (in 2015, XJTLU became the first onshore Chinese University to receive RIBA accreditation).
The historic 19-23 Abercromby Square sits at the centre of School life, providing refurbished conference spaces and seminar rooms that every member of the School can call their own. The Department of Music has expanded into an additional building with a significant increase in the number of practice rooms, recording studios and new instruments, including considerable investment in updating our stock of pianos. In Architecture we have invested in a new media centre with state of the art printing and design facilities, additional studio and assembly space, enhanced workshop facilities and plans to develop a digital design lab to support a practice based research community for our staff and postgraduate students. There has recently been further investment in new Mac and PC suites with specialist software for Music and Communication and Media with additional facilities for Architecture and Music being included in the University’s Capital Estates Strategy. Architecture and Communication and Media also offer programmes on our London Campus with the first cohort of our Masters in Communication and Media graduating in December 2017.
