Bluecoat Display Centre - Golden Age of Lettering

Golden Age of Lettering

'A Golden Age of Lettering' encompasses thought provoking projects by a range of designer makers touching ceramics, jewellery and architecture. There is an explosion of work within this category, and we will be featuring pieces by Rosella Garavaglia, Claire Hillerby, Deborah Hopson-Wolpe, Eleanor Suggett, Christine Toh and Jessica Turrell. We will also be featuring a small press section accompanying the exhibition with work by Hand & Eye Letterpress, and Harrington and Squires.

As part of the artistic exhibition programme this year in Liverpool, Bluecoat Display Centre is celebrating the links that the city is proactively encouraging in 2010 with Shanghai, China. Liverpool is the only city apart from London to have its own pavilion at the large international expo that is taking place there during 2010.

This exhibition brings together 2 artists who are based in the same studios in Bristol, Louise Gardiner’s lively illustrative embroideries and Sophie Woodrow’s curious sculptural ceramics are both created from highly imaginative worlds of creatures and characters.

For the final exhibition of the Bluecoat Display Centre’s 50th Anniversary year programme we wanted to reflect on the makers we have had a long relationship with as well as looking to new and young makers, which has been a criteria in the Display Centre’s exhibition policy for many years. With this in mind we have asked 5 of our established jewellers to exhibit and to each nominate an up-and-coming jeweller, whose work interests, inspires and excites them, to be part of the same exhibition.

Magdalene Odundo Solo - The Elisabeth Zuckerman memorial exhibition

Magdalene showed her hand built and coiled ceramics in 1985, very early in her career, at the Bluecoat Display Centre and is now an internationally renowned artist who last year won the African Art Recognition Award. In this major new exhibition Magdalene will show her renowned ceramics alongside new forms in metal seen for the first time in exhibition in the UK.
