Independents Liverpool Biennial

The Independents 08 strand of the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art is the art world equivalent of a festival fringe, an independent mix of exhibitions, live art, performances, interventions and happenings which occupy and emerge from galleries and spread across the city into every available space; the streets, markets, shops, bars, parks and churches. The Independents are not themed, categorised or centrally curated by the city’s institutions. They exist on their own terms, doing their own thing, looking for attention, dialogue and interaction.

The Independents involves the largest number of artists and curators during the Biennial with over 160 exhibitions and events and over 250 artists in more than 60 venues.

A British Art and Design Association project inspired and curated by the Liverpool born artist Terry Duffy. The exhibition comprises an eclectic mix of painting, photography, sculpture, film and installation and tackles themes including urban cultural diversity, homelessness, alienation, sexuality as well as love, passion and spirituality.

In probably the last show in the Biennial programme, Mark Willcox is showing, in a solo exhibition ‘Rush Hour’, a body of semi-abstract work that recreates his experiences of rush hour with a sight-impaired condition

This exhibition is a major retrospective of the early drawings by legendary gay artist Tom of Finland. Over 100 illustrations from 1944-1984 will be on show. It is one of the Homotopia festival trailblazers for the Tom of Finland Foundation.
