For the 2nd year artinliverpool.com has awarded a Purchase Prize to a graduating student at the Hope University Fine Art & Design degree show.
At tonight’s viewing we presented the prize to Paula Baines.
You may think we’d be heartily tired of images of the Liverpool waterfront but this was a night-time photograph which has been through a lengthy process of deconstruction then printed onto material.
We felt it is a really striking image and enjoyed her other works using similar techniques, mostly portraits and including text.
Her work is to do with memories which become elusive, fragmented, distorted.
The rest of the degree show is excellent as always. As well as the fine art, I really admire the ceramics, metalwork and textiles.
The Hope University Degree show runs at Cornerstone Gallery until Friday May 30 2008 (excluding May 25 and 26)
