The Merseyside Skeptics Society is a non-profit organisation which aims to develop and support the skeptical community on Merseyside (they made the headlines last year when they spearheaded ‘The 10:23 Campaign’ to raise awareness of the dangers of using homeopathy). On Thursday 16th June at 8pm, investigative journalist Brian Deer visits Liverpool to speak about how he uncovered the “elaborate fraud” behind the MMR scare.

Based on a paper in the Lancet medical journal, the MMR scare triggered a global alarm, with a rash of worried parents across the world choosing not to vaccinate their children against the deadly diseases we now see re-occuring across Europe, and the Wirral becomes the latest area of the UK to suffer a measles outbreak.

During his 7-year investigation for The Sunday Times, Brian Deer examined the work of the doctor behind the scandal – Andrew Wakefield – and how the research linking MMR with autism was rigged, how Wakefield rigged it, who paid him for it and how much money he expected to make out of it.

Speaking on Thursday 16th June at the Head of Steam, Brian will go into depth on the investigation which finally led to Andrew Wakefield losing his medical license and the full withdrawal of the paper behind the global health controversy of the decade.

The event starts at 8pm, culturepool will be there from 7.30pm, turn up early if you’d like to get a seat with the group! Entry is FREE. Just turn up and enjoy.
