The Edmund Gardner pilot boat is the largest object in the collections of National Museums Liverpool. For nearly 30 years the ship was a base out at sea for Liverpool Pilots, who guide shipping in and out of the River Mersey and docks, a service that continues to this day. The Edmund Gardner has been a landmark on the Liverpool Waterfront since the early 1980’s and is one of the gems of Liverpool’s maritime history. The ship is part of the National Historic Fleet and of pre-eminent national historic significance. Since 2011, access to the ship for visitors has been through volunteer led guided tours. Over 3,500 visitors have accessed the ship in that time. In 2015 the Volunteer team were awarded the prestigious Marsh Award for Volunteers in Museum Learning for the North-West region. Since 2014 the Edmund Gardner has been painted with a special dazzle inspired artwork by renowned artist Carlos Cruz-Diez.
