Joël was born in 1979 in New Zealand were she grew up. After finishing her degree in graphic design at Canterbury University’s School of Fine Art (in Christchurch), she moved to the UK, where she has worked for the past eight years as a graphic designer.
Joël’s works demonstrate a fascination with British whimsy, the iconography of sweets, cakes and teatime, not to mention our interest in ornaments and royal memorabilia. All of these objects are described in egg tempera on board with a gesso ground, a medium that demands time, patience and an eye for detail. It is in fact a medium that is pefectly suited to her subject matter.
Despite the painstaking approach, all of Joël’s works have a lightness of touch and a playful sense of humour that can’t fail to make you smile. Her large painting, Black Treacle was selected for this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
